Borussia Dortmund vs PSG: H2H Stats Show Even Fixture
Over the years there has been some iconic games between two of Europe’s most iconic football clubs. Even before, PSG had their billions, they were still somewhat of an in-vogue entity with a good pedigree of players having plied their trade, including Ronaldinho.
Meanwhile, Dortmund can be considered one of Europe’s elite clubs, having also won the Champions League – a feat PSG are yet to accomplish. What should be taken into account, is that pre-1990s the two clubs were very much in their building phase – especially Borussia Dortmund, who didn’t play in Europe until then.
Furthermore, PSG was only founded in 1970 and as a result, it took them a couple of decades to rise through the French football pyramid. The first competitive game came in 2010/11, though there were two friendly games between the two clubs in the early 1990s. 2010/11 Europa League: Group Stage
A game which, despite the 1-1 draw, produced drama and excitement, this was kicked off, following a stunning long range strike from Dortmund’s Turkish midfielder, Nuri Sahin. In a game that the home side dominated, the German’s simply couldn’t add that second goal, despite a flurry of efforts, with Lucas Barrios missing two huge opportunities. They were punished for their inability to be more productive, with Clement Chamtome equalising in the 87th minute.
2010/11 Europa League: Group Stage
Played at the Parc des Princes, this was the second group game, between the two sides, which occurred in November, turning out to be a drab stalemate. Proceedings began nervously in Paris, with very little clear cut chances created between both parties. Lukasz Piszcek came the closest for the German club in the first half, firing over the bar, while Mevlut Erding headed wide for PSG. In the second half it turned into an end-to-end battle, though neither side could break the deadlock, despite the best efforts of the away club, with Shinji Kagawa going close on two occasions.
2019/20 Champions League: Last 16 1st Leg
In the first leg of this round of 16 match, this provided much intrigue and excitement, especially given there were so many star players on show. In a game that finished 2-1 to the home side, thanks to a brace from star striker Erling Haaland, there were plenty of opportunities throughout.
Although Neymar scored in between after great work from Kylian M’bappe, the visitors could not find another way through, thanks to some resolute and determined Dortmund defending.
2019/20 Champions League: Last 16 2nd Leg
A dramatic turnaround for the second leg, saw the French side advance 3-2 on aggregate, with Neymar and Juan Bernat completing the job before half-time. This was match that was not without incident however, with some hard tackles, near misses, great saves and good individual efforts – including Angel Di Maria’s corner that resulted in Neymar’s goal.
Tempers flared late on though, when Dortmund’s Emre Can was sent off after clashing with Neymar as frustrations boiled over in France, as PSG advanced, where they would eventually lose in the final to Bayern Munich.
2023/24 Champions League: Group Stage
In matchday one, the French side kicked off proceedings with an impressive 2-0 victory, with an M’bappe penalty and an Ahraf Hakimi placed finish following a well-worked one-two. It was a game that PSG dominated, with Dortmund heavily restricted in France due to a stubborn and well-organised home defence.
2023/24 Champions League: Group Stage
Matchday six saw the two teams play out a 1-1 draw in Germany, with both goals coming in five second half minutes, following a first half stalemate. It was Dortmund who took the lead six minutes after the restart with talented youngster, Karim Adeyemi dispatching with poise. Meanwhile, PSG’s midfield prospect, Warren Zaire-Emery equalised not long after in a game which quickly became somewhat of an end-to-end affair. Some impressive saves from PSG goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma earned the French side a draw, ensuring they progressed along with Dortmund.
2023/24 Champions League: Semi-Final 1st Leg
The two sides met in the last four of the Champions League the same season after some impressive performances. Played in Germany, the first leg was somewhat of a tense affair and only striker, Niclas Fullkrug’s first half goals proved to be the difference. Meanwhile, both Mbappe and Hakimi hit the woodwork in quick succession for PSG, in addition to Fabian Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele squandering golden chances.
2023/24 Champions League: Semi-Final 2nd Leg
Travelling to Paris with the tie in their hands, Dortmund turned up and produced a defensive masterclass, led by veteran centre-back Mats Hummels, whose 50th minute towering header from Julian Brandt’s corner proved to be a huge psychological advantage. The home side dominated possession in their quest to manufacture a fightback, however, Dortmund’s defence stood firm.
