The Borussia Dortmund comeback king

The Borussia Dortmund comeback king

With one swing off his majestic right foot, Marco Reus reminded the Borussia Dortmund fans what they were missing.

Not that they needed reminding of the outrageous talent and quality of the attacking midfielder.

After Mario Gotze, dummied Andre Schurrle’s cross, the German fired in an incredible shot, which seemed to defy the laws of physics from the right-hand side of the penalty area, to give BVB a 31st-minute lead.

He looked fresh, sharp and certainly did not look like a player who has missed the last 27 games for Dortmund through injury.

The incredible technique in his first goal since his return from injury emphasises the fact that his natural ability and supreme talent has not been hindered by a career that has unfortunately been blighted by so many injuries.

A ruptured cruciate ligament suffered in last year’s German Cup Final was the latest injury and it consigned him to nine miserable months on the shelf.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach star has missed an incredible 66 games of football since the beginning of the 2015-16 season, through injury.

He has also missed the last two major international tournaments: an ankle injury suffered in a routine 6-1 friendly win over Armenia prevented him from competing in 2014’s world cup triumph and he also had to sit out of the 2016 European Championships in France.

It is difficult to imagine what could have been achieved, had he been fit for at least half of the games he missed.

Since returning from injury Reus has one goal and one assist, the latter coming in the recent 2-0 victory over Hamburg.

Having been involved in two out of the last three goals, it is easy to see how important the skipper is.

He has made 391 appearances for the German outfit and has scored 161 and assisted 93, but many will be wondering just what he could have achieved had he stayed clear or injuries.

It is no coincidence that strikers perform better when the German is around. Former strikers Robert Lewandowski and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang all formed lethal partnerships with the wingers and consistently hit the 20 goal mark.

This is no coincidence, and it is also the primary reason why Bayern Munich have frequently enquired to sign the German international.

It is also the primary reason why Borussia Dortmund have furiously slammed the door shut on any attempt by ‘FC Hollywood’ to sign their talisman and captain.

Overall, it is evident that the Dortmund man is the comeback king and Mr. Resilient.
