How the 6-0 defeat could make fans turn off the Bundesliga?

It is the league which boasts the highest rates of attendance in all of the biggest football leagues.

It is also the league which arguably boasts the best atmospheres and some of the most passionate football fans in the world.

The Bundesliga truly is a breath of fresh air.

Very rarely do you see fans leaving the games early, half-empty stadiums and there is always a brilliant buzz and energy once all of the fans go through the turnstiles.

In terms of fan experience, the Bundesliga is miles away from most of the big leagues.

However, the one thing the Bundesliga does not have is the unpredictability and the excitement of the Premier League.

Every man and his dog would jump at the chance to go and watch a game at the Bundesliga, with the safe standing areas and the fact that you’re allowed a beer pitch-side at the matches, it is a football fan’s dream.

But the 6-0 destruction of Borussia Dortmund by Bayern Munich, their closest rivals, proves that no one can compete with the German Champions.

Bayern Munich have been champions in the last five years and it is almost a given that Bayern Munich will take the crown.

Yes, it will take a capitulation of seismic proportions for Manchester City to lose the Premier League this season, but no one would have predicted that at the start of the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund teams put up a firm resistance to the juggernaut that is the 27-time League Champions, but that resistance disintegrated like a tea-dipped rich tea biscuit when Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski went to Bayern Munich.

Mats Hummels would then go on to follow those two, meaning Munich possessed three of the most important players in Dortmund’s league winning team.

This must have made spectators outside Germany turn of their box sets.

The football that Bayern play in extraordinary at times but when there is no element of competition, meaning there is absolutely no chance that Bayern will drop points let alone lose, many fans will switch over to other football leagues, or the Great British Bake Off if it is on.

The difference between the Premier League and the Bundesliga is that there are six contenders for the title in the Premier League every season and even then none of those teams are guaranteed to win.

Leicester City in the 2015-16 season summed up the unpredictability when they won the league.

Dortmund was the last team to win the Bundesliga that was not Bayern in the 2011-12 and since then four different clubs have lifted the Premier League and no one has been able to retain the title.

This is what keeps the television audiences so high and this is what secures world record-breaking television deals.

The money from these television deals is also distributed equally in the Premier League meaning the money does not stick with the big six.

The absence of unpredictability in the Bundesliga in terms of the race to the title is one thing that is in the way of the German league in terms of the size of their television rights deal.

But, if the closest rivals to Bayern Munich keep getting battered 6-0, audiences outside of the Bundesliga will keep dropping as there is no excitement.

Fans love to see great football, but most of all fans love excitement.
