Will Jürgen Klopp Ever Come Back to Dortmund?

Over the past two seasons, Borussia Dortmund have come close to winning the Bundesliga and winning the Champions League. That reminded a lot of supporters about the time that Jürgen Klopp was in charge at the Westfalenstadion, not least because the last time the club was in the Champions League final the German was in charge and the match was played at Wembley Stadium.

Given the fact that Die Borussen haven’t won the top-flight title since Kloppo was in charge, it has left some reminiscing about his reign and wondering whether he’d ever return to manage the club at any point in the future or if he’s truly done with them.

He IS Coming Back

If some Dortmund supporters had just about managed to get over the departure of Jürgen Klopp for Anfield then they probably won’t be all that thrilled to learn that he is actually coming back to manage a Die Schwarzgelben side at Signal Iduna Park.

Sadly for those that would love to see him back in the Dortmund hot-seat on a more permanent basis, however, he is only coming back temporarily. It has been confirmed that the once-bespectacled boss will take charge of his former club for the testimonial of two of his former players in the form of Jakub Błaszczykowski and Łukasz Piszczek, which is taking place on September seventh.

Błaszczykowski left the club in 2016 and Piszczek in 2021, but neither have yet had a game to honour their time at the club. That will change during the September international break when a game will see a group of BVB’s former players line-up against a Polish all-star team in order to honour the pair.

They were both at the club doing Jürgen’s time at the helm, winning the Bundesliga in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, but now they have retired it is seen as the right time for Dortmund’s supporters to show them their appreciation, as well as welcome 57-year-old Klopp back in the wake of his departure from the Liverpool manager’s job.

Might it Give Him a Taste of the Old Times?

There will be numerous Dortmund fans desperately hoping that Kloppo will remember how much he enjoyed seeing the Yellow Wall in full flow and sitting in the home team’s dugout, choosing to return to club management with Die Borussen. The one-time boss at the Westfalenstadion left his role at Anfield after saying that he was ‘tired’, confessing that he was ‘running out of energy’ and just didn’t have what it takes to keep going.

It is entirely possible that he has now had enough of a break to consider a return to management in some form, with some believing that he’s likely to become the next Germany boss.

There have been rumours that he’s poised to accept a role as ‘Head of Football’ at Borussia Dortmund next year. The problem with that, though, is that any issues for the current manager would soon see supporters demanding that Klopp be given the role instead. Jürgen is the sort of person who would hate to put someone in that position, which is why the likelihood is that he would turn down any offers of the manager’s job for himself.

Current boss Nuri Şahin, who himself played for Liverpool for a period, would almost certainly be unwelcoming of the arrival of Klopp in any kind of capacity for that exact reason.

If Not Dortmund, Where?

Given the fact that Edin Terzić took Die Borussen to second in the league in the 2022-2023 season, only missing out on the title on the final day, and then to the Champions League final last season, it is unlikely that the club will be in a hurry to replace Sahin without at least giving him a chance to improve upon his predecessor’s performance.

If they do decide to roll the dice, should Sahin have a bad season, then there is little question that they will at least try to persuade Kloppo to return to his former stomping ground. The German has said that he intends to take a break from football ‘for a year or two’, but not retire altogether.

With that in mind, the obvious question to ask would be about where else he would go, if not back to Dortmund. Having bought a house in Mallorca for £3.4 million that he and his wife Ulla are doing up, he said, “I’ve dreamed of having a house in the south all my life. I like the weather, the climate, I like the people”. Some might read that as the German saying that his next job might well end up being in Spain, although he himself said he doesn’t want to emigrate.

He did hint that he might return to some form of management, saying, “It’s out of the question that I’ll stop working altogether. But I don’t see myself continuing at the same pace as before at the moment”.
