Jobe Bellingham’s Parents Barred From Dortmund Dressing Room
It is fair to say that some footballers have good reputations, whilst others do not. Sometimes, those reputations are down to the behaviour of the players themselves, whilst other times it is about the people that are around the player, speaking and acting on their behalf.
Some clubs try not to deal with certain agents, for example, such is the extent to which they cause trouble and issues.
In the case of Jobe Bellingham, one of Borussia Dortmund’s latest signings, it is his parents that have caught the headlines over the last few days.
Dortmund & the Bellingham Name
Supporters of Borussia Dortmund have grown used to the Bellingham name in recent years. In 2020, Die Borussen signed Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City in a deal worth an initial fee of £25 million. That made him the most expensive 17-year-old in the history of the sport, so it is perhaps little wonder that his parents began to get an inflated sense of the ability of their offspring.
He was also much sought-after, with numerous different clubs wanting to win his signature, but the player and his parents decided that it would be best for his development if he were to go to Germany.

That, of course, proved to be exactly the right move. After three years at the Westfalenstadion, Bellingham joined Real Madrid for more than €100 million. That, though, wasn’t the end of the relationship between Borussia Dortmund and the Bellingham family. This summer, Jude’s brother Jobe was signed from Sunderland, costing the Bundesliga team just shy of £30 million. That made him the German club’s second-most expensive signing after Ousmane Dembélé.
Whether the club would go ahead with the signing now that they’ve had to deal with his parents is the great unknown.
What’s Happened
Borussia Dortmund travelled to St Pauli in the opening fixture of the 2025-2026 Bundesliga campaign, seemingly cruising to victory when they went 3-1 up with just four minutes left of normal time. Der BVB seemed to implode from that point, however. The away team conceded a penalty and had a man sent off, allowing St Pauli to score twice and snatch a point. Jobe Bellingham had been given his debut in the match, but Niko Kovač decided to make a double substitution at half-time in a move that was seen as a chastening one for the club’s expensive signing.
Borussia Dortmund will keep players’ parents away from locker room areas after an incident with Jobe Bellingham’s father.

The mother and father of Jude and Jobe Bellingham, Denise and Mark, were in Hamburg in order to watch their younger son make his debut at his new club. They were unimpressed by the manager’s decision, as well as the fact that Der BVB ended up drawing the game after seemingly having the result tied up. According to Sky Sports Germany, Mark Bellingham sought out Sebastian Kehl, the Dortmund Sporting Director, after the full-time whistle in order to make his feelings known. Reports suggest that the pair had a loud confrontation outside the Dortmund dressing room that could be heard inside.
Mark Bellingham acts as the agent and advisor for Jobe, taking the post-match moment to demand an opportunity to speak to Kovač about his decision-making. The reports suggest that Bellingham senior made ‘no secret’ of how he felt about what had happened, which has caused issues within the club as a result. On the back of the situation that developed, Dortmund have decided to change the ability of parents to go into what would otherwise be restricted areas, coming on the back of what is considered to be an embarrassing moment for everyone concerned in the matter.
A Good Relationship
Lars Ricksen, the Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund, spoke to Sky90 on The Football Debate podcast about what happened. In the episode, Ricksen confirmed that part of the reason why Der BVB had moved to sign Jobe Bellingham was the excellent relationship that the club had developed with the Bellingham family after the signing of his brother Jude.
He said, “We got Jobe Bellingham because we really built a relationship of trust with the parents over the years. Now the family flew in especially for their son’s first Bundesliga game and wanted to meet Jobe after the game.”

Whilst the argument that happened between Kehl and Mark Bellingham drew the headlines, Ricksen moved to quell any suggestion of an issue between all parties. He said that they had had an ‘emotional conversation’ but that it is ‘not a problem’ because of the relationship that had already been put in place. In fact, he went on to say ‘everything has been resolved, no drama’.
Of course, when a club decides to change its entire approach to who is and isn’t allowed in a certain area of a football ground on the back of an incident, it is fair to say that all might not be as peachy as is being suggested.
