Carney Chukwuemeka Joins on Five-Year Deal
It has been a strange summer for Borussia Dortmund. It is clear after how the start of last season went that Der BVB need to improve in countless different areas, whilst the way the campaign ended was a solid representation of how good a manager Niko Kovač is.
There have been some headline-grabbing signings already, such as Jobe Bellingham joining from Sunderland, but there hasn’t been as much movement as supporters will have wanted.
That has shifted slightly thanks to the arrival of Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea, but what can supporters expect from him?
£24 Million on England Youth Player

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the arrival of Carney Chukwuemeka on a deal worth around £24 million. In some ways, his arrival is something of an ‘and what?’ signing by the club, given the fact that the 21-year-old was on loan at the Westfalenstadion for the second half of last season.
Yet there is also the fact that he is a talented player who undoubtedly makes Der BVB stronger, which can be seen in the manner of Dortmund’s end to the Bundesliga campaign that saw them snatch a Champions League place when it looked extremely unlikely that they would do so midway through the campaign.
Given the fact that he was unwanted at Stamford Bridge, Chukwuemeka will be pleased to arrive in Germany, where he is loved by the supporters. From a Chelsea point of view, the sale was a necessary one. The Blues need to ensure that they have a positive transfer balance at the end of the window, having already breached UEFA’s rules and boasting a squad cost ratio that is above 80%.
In fact, he is unlikely to be the last outgoing name, considering the fact that they have spent £277 million and only raised £70 million, whilst names such as Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Raheem Sterling all want out.
An Existing Relationship
Given the fact that the player spent the end of last season on loan at Signal Iduna Park, it is fair to say that there is a good existing relationship in place between Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund. That could also be seen in the fact that Jamie Gittens made the reverse journey, having been signed by the Stamford Bridge club for in the region of £50 million at the start of July.
Although further transfers are unlikely this summer, it is more than possible that the two clubs will do business again in the future as they have worked well together for a decent length of time now, with all parties being content.

That being said, there is likely to be one more news story about the two clubs when Aarón Anselmino confirms his signing with the German side on a season-long loan, flying to Germany in order to complete the deal.
Whilst not many people will have any idea who Anselmino is, the centre-back will strengthen Dortmund at the back and earn some good experience after signing for the Blues from Boca Juniors last year in a deal worth over £15 million. Dortmund fans might be hoping for something a bit more exciting before the window shuts, but the relationship between the clubs appears strong.
Fabio Silva Soon to Arrive Too
If Borussia Dortmund fans would like a more interesting signing than the arrival of someone who played for the club last year, perhaps the signing of Fabio Silva will do the job. The Wolverhampton Wanderers striker was rumoured to be close to a move to the Westfalenstadion, and that €25 million deal was announced shortly afterwards.
According to reports, the structure of the deal and any potential bonuses was holding up the signing for a time, but it didn’t take long to get the go-ahead. The Portuguese player arrived in the West Midlands from Porto for £35 million in 2020, which was a club record fee at the time.

Having taken on loan spells at Anderlecht, PSV, Rangers and Las Palmas, Silva is looking to get a more regular home after it didn’t really work out with Wolves. The Premier League side is seemingly looking to clear the deck this summer, already having sold Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Goncalo Guedes, Nelson Semedo and Pablo Sarabia amongst others.
There are also links that would see Jorgen Strand Larsen join Newcastle United as the Magpies look to take advantage of the money supplied by their Saudi Arabian owners. Since the Silva deal has gone through, it is now at least a touch more interesting than the return of a former loan player.
