Gittens Out, Bellingham In? BVB Transfer News

It is going to be an interesting summer for Borussia Dortmund. When the club decided to pull the trigger on Nuri Şahin as manager back in January, it looked as if they would be lucky to get any European place, let alone a Champions League one.
Then the decision was taken to appoint Niko Kovač as his replacement, the club went on an excellent run towards the end of the campaign and the top-flight continental competition was secured thanks to a fourth-place finish. Now the transfer window is what will be dominating the headlines, with two big names on the lips of those around Signal Iduna Park.
Jamie Gittens Tops Chelsea Transfer List
The name of Jadon Sancho will be known only too well to many at the Westfalenstadion, given the fact that the winger moved to Borussia Dortmund from Manchester City back in 2017. Having made more than 100 league appearances for the club, 2021 saw him depart Germany to head back to Manchester, only this time with Old Trafford being his destination. It is fair to say that things didn’t really work out for him there, with a succession of managers feeling as though he was not quite what they were looking for. He was sent back to Dortmund on loan before signing a loan deal with Chelsea for the 2024-2025 season.

Now the London club is weighing up whether keeping hold of Sancho is the right thing for them to do, or whether a move for another talented young English winger might be a better suit for them. The jokes around Chelsea’s constant decision to sign as many players as possible aside, it seems as though Jamie Gittens has caught the eye of the higher-ups at Stamford Bridge and a possible move for the 20-year-old is now on the cards. According to reports, the Premier League side has already engaged Der BVB in talks over 20-year-old Gittens’ possible move from Germany to England.

The big question really is why it is that Chelsea feel as though they need the player in the first place. Has Sancho’s time in West London failed because the player isn’t good enough, or because the system being used by Enzo Maresca doesn’t really have a need for a right-sided winger? Gittens plays in the same position as Sancho, scoring 12 goals in 48 games across all competitions in the 2024-2025 campaign, so it would make sense if Maresca felt as though he has the right idea but the wrong personnel to execute it. Regardless, it looks like there will be numerous more ins at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Jobe Bellingham on Dortmund’s List
Mention the name Bellingham to most fans of Borussia Dortmund and you would be sure to get warm responses. Jude Bellingham was an excellent player for Die Borussen, having joined from Birmingham City in 2020. Not only that, but the club was able to get more than €100 million for him when he transferred to Real Madrid at the start of the 2023-2024 campaign. That money is being used to bolster Niko Kovač’s squad, with one of the names on the list of signings being considered by Der BVB this summer being that of Jude Bellingham’s brother, Jobe Bellingham.
The current Sunderland midfielder also began his footballing career at Birmingham City, having made his way through the youth ranks before playing for the first-team a number of times between 2021 and 2023. At that point, he moved to the Black Cats for a little over £1 million. His debut came against Ipswich Town on the sixth of August before scoring a brace against Rotherham United a couple of weeks later. August 2024 saw him sign a new contract, extending his stay at the Stadium of Light until 2028, but it now looks as though he’s on Borussia Dortmund’s list for the summer.

Having helped Sunderland get back into the Premier League for the first time in nearly a decade, Bellingham is sought after by numerous clubs across Europe. It is hoped by those in the Westfalenstadion that they will be able to persuade him to head to Germany, however, given the fact that they can offer Champions League football. The feeling is that a deal worth around £35 million can be done for the 19-year-old, even though rumours suggest that he’s not Kovač’s first choice for the summer. Ardon Jashari is the man that Kovač wants, but it’s looking like there will be another Bellingham playing at Signal Iduna Park before long.
