If Gittens Joins Chelsea, How Will BVB Spend the Money?
Chelsea continue their run of being one of the maddest teams in Europe by buying any and all players that show them the slightest bit of interest. Since the arrival of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital as the club’s owners in the wake of Roman Abramovich being forced to sell the London club, the Blues have invested more than €500 million in forwards alone.
Now it looks as though they have their sights set on Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens, but if that move goes through, then how will the German side look to invest the fee that they receive in return for the player?
Where is the Gittens Deal Up To?
Chelsea have already spent more than £50 million with the signing of João Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion in the last few days, which is a fee that could go up to more than £60 million if certain conditions are met. Rather than resting on their laurels, however, the Stamford Bridge side are reportedly also trying to prize Jamie Gittens away from Borussia Dortmund. The English winger arrived at the Westfalenstadion as a youth player back in 2020, having been on Chelsea’s books for a time prior to signing at the Manchester City Academy in 2018 and staying there for two years.

Although both the world health crisis at the time and injuries meant that the player’s Dortmund career got off to a stuttering start, he did eventually do enough to break into the first team and notched up 76 appearances in the Bundesliga across the three years that followed, scoring 12 goals. That appears to have been enough to persuade Chelsea to splash out for the 20-year-old, who they will be hoping can work with Pedro and Liam Delap in firing the club back towards the upper echelons of the Premier League. There are suggestions that he’s already completed his medical.
How Much Will Dortmund Sell Gittens For?
All of the talk suggested that Chelsea wanted to get Gittens in prior to the start of the Club World Cup, but they failed to meet the €65 million asking prize that Der BVB had reportedly put on his head. Sebastian Kehl had said that he was free to talk to other clubs, which many took to be a direct reference to the Blues’ attempts to sign him, but the fact that Die Borussen have no need to sell him means that the valuation is unlikely to shift all that much. Rumours are that the Stamford Bridge side will be allowed to meet that valuation including realistically achievable add-ons.

The Athletic reported that Chelsea and Dortmund reached an ‘agreement in principle’ for the winger’s move, although the exact figure wasn’t confirmed. Still, it is likely that he will be leaving the Westfalenstadion for in the region of £55 million, which would tick the box for Der BVB’s valuation of the player. It is a huge sum of money when you consider the fact that he wasn’t a natural fit for Niko Kovač’s preferred formation. The German club has been helped in driving the price up by the fact that his contract runs until 2028, meaning that the Blues will have to pay if they really want him.
What the Money Will Be Spent On

Obviously, nothing is ever set in stone in football and it is certainly interesting that no move has been confirmed by either club yet. That being said, Dortmund are naturally considering what their options are should the deal go through and they be on the receiving end of a sum of around €50 million. A local publication in Germany is suggesting that Der BVB will look to spend the money bolstering their attacking options, having lost a winger thanks to the departure of Gittens. Johan Bakayoko is a player that has been on Dortmund’s radar for some time, so a return of interest in him wouldn’t be a shock.
Die Borussen would need to rival both Monaco and Olympique Marseille for the 22-year-old winger’s signature, however, so that transfer would be far from straightforward. Chelsea signed Delap from relegated Premier League team Ipswich Town, with Dortmund also keen on his former teammate Omari Hutchinson. The one thing that seems to be unlikely is the return to the Westfalenstadion of Jadon Sancho, who has found that his career has stalled ever since he left the Bundesliga for Manchester United. Speaking on the matter, Kehl said, “We have other priorities.”
