Who is Borussia Dortmund\u2019s greatest striker of the modern era?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Borussia Dortmund have been able to boast a plethora of world class strikers over the past decade, with the likes of Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having enjoyed fruitful spells in black and yellow.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the turn of the century, the Yellow Wall enjoyed watching several other great number nines lead the line for their club.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">83 &#8211; Since Erling Haaland made his competitive debut for Borussia Dortmund exactly three years ago today, only Robert Lewandowski has scored more goals (104) than the Norwegian (83) in Europe&#39;s big-five leagues. Scorer. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/buHBhxnfwK\">pic.twitter.com\/buHBhxnfwK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; OptaFranz (@OptaFranz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OptaFranz\/status\/1615674356423659520?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 18, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The great Adi Prei\u00dfler is the record goal scorer in BVB history with 177 goals, while Manfred Burgsm\u00fcller notched up 158 goals in 252 appearances and Friedhelm Konietzka scored 155 in less than 200 games in the early 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>St\u00e9phane Chapuisat and Karl-Heinz Riedle spearheaded Dortmund\u2019s attack in the club\u2019s victorious 1997 UEFA Champions League final against Juventus; they scored 123 and 36 goals for \u2018die Schwarzgelbe\u2019 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, there have also been centre forwards who haven\u2019t enjoyed such riches at Signal Iduna Park: Adrian Ramos and Ciro Immobile are names that come to mind from recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Edin Terzic currently has the likes of S\u00e9bastien Haller, Youssoufa Moukoko and Karim Adeyemi at his disposal. Lucas Barrios (2009-2012)<\/h2>\n<p><b>Appearances: 102<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Goals: 49<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Assists: 17<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Honours:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bundesliga x2 (2011, 2012)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DFB-Pokal x1 (2012)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Argentina-born Paraguay international Lucas Barrios was given his route to Europe by Borussia Dortmund in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The now 38-year-old endured a slow start to life at Signal Iduna Park, but soon made his name, scoring nine goals in 10 matches from October to December.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That debut campaign saw Barrios end the year with 29 direct goal involvements in 36 matches.<\/p>\n<p>31 was his tally in the following season, as he netted 16 times to help \u2018die Schwarzgelben\u2019 to a Bundesliga title, becoming a key player in that triumph.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Fans still thank me today for this goal!&quot; | Flashback: Lucas Barrios\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UMKABVVSNUI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the 2011-12 season, a year which saw the club win a historic double under J\u00fcrgen Klopp, Barrios was ousted from his position up top by a certain Polish striker, who would make it hard for anyone to overthrow him.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Lucas Barrios was a brilliant servant to the club and was just the number nine they needed in a time of transition. He warrants a place on this list.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Jan Koller (2001-2006)<\/h2>\n<p><b>Appearances: 184<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Goals: 79<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Assists: 32<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Honours:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bundesliga x1 (2002)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A player who just about qualifies as a striker from the \u2018modern era\u2019, Jan Koller was a goal machine in the early 2000s for \u2018die Borussen\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly to Amoroso and Barrios, the Czech forward enjoyed a fruitful debut season, scoring 11 goals and claiming eight assists, helping the club to its first Bundesliga title since 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Amoroso, Koller was Dortmund\u2019s other goalscorer in the UEFA Cup final defeat to Feyenoord in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>After that first year, the striker really kicked on and thrived; in the 2002-2003 season he scored eight goals in the UEFA Champions League and a further 13 in the league.<\/p>\n<p>That was followed up by 15 and 16-goal seasons (Bundesliga only), in both of which Koller notched up five assists.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Goalkeeper vs. Bayern, derby goal, goal for the title | The best moments of Jan Koller\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8RQN_AN_SUs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Excluding his final season with the Black and Yellows, where he was hindered by injury, the Czech Republic international managed 55 goals across four Bundesliga campaigns: excellent numbers which certainly earn him a place in the top four.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s not forget that he played almost half an hour as a goalkeeper in November 2002 against Bayern Munich in \u2018der Klassiker\u2019 and kept a clean sheet after Jens Lehmann was sent off.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2013-2018)<\/h2>\n<p><b>Appearances: 213<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Goals: 141<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Assists: 36<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Honours:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>DFB-Pokal x1 (2017)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DFL-Supercup x2 (2013, 2014)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having the top scorer and longest serving player of this list in third place seems rather harsh on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but that is more telling of the quality of the top two rather than a slight on a man who was incredible for BVB.<\/p>\n<p>Born in France, the Gabon international arrived from Saint-\u00c9tienne in 2013 and gave four and a half years of top service at Signal Iduna Park.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2520\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2520\" style=\"width: 694px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/aubameyang-300x160.jpeg\" alt=\"Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Borussia Dortmund vs Hertha Berlin\" width=\"694\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/aubameyang-300x160.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/aubameyang-768x410.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/aubameyang.jpeg 880w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo: Borussia Dortmund)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite having to compete with the aforementioned notorious Polish number nine, Aubameyang still managed 13 goals in his maiden campaign in the Bundesliga.<\/p>\n<p>But after Robert Lewandowski departed, the now 33-year-old truly made that striker spot his own.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2014-2015 season he managed 25 goals across all competitions, before netting 39 the following term.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Die Schwarzgelben\u2019 reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2017, a year which also saw the club win the DFB-Pokal; Aubameyang\u2019s seven goals in Europe went nicely with his tally of 31 in the league.<\/p>\n<p>That tally won the current Chelsea man the golden boot. He was the first Dortmund player in three years to do so.<\/p>\n<p>He showed no signs of stopping, either. Aubameyang scored 21 goals in the first half of the 2017-2018 season, form which earned him a move to the Premier League with Arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>Borussia Dortmund\u2019s eighth top goalscorer of all-time will consider himself quite unfortunate to come third here.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Erling Haaland (2020-2022)<\/h2>\n<p><b>Appearances: 89<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Goals: 86<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Assists: 23<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Honours:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>DFB-Pokal x1 (2021)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Erling Haaland: All 86 goals for Borussia Dortmund\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IHXXU4L6el8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Just ahead of Aubameyang is arguably the most prolific striker in world football at the moment: Erling Haaland.<\/p>\n<p>Son of Premier League stalwart Alf-Inge Haaland, the Norwegian made his name as a 19-year-old, tearing up the Champions League with RB Salzburg.<\/p>\n<p>His form in Austria saw him become one of football\u2019s hottest properties and brightest talents, attracting interest from a whole host of European giants.<\/p>\n<p>Known for developing young talents, Haaland chose to join Borussia Dortmund in January 2020 and he would only get better.<\/p>\n<p>The current Manchester City man became the first player in Bundesliga history to score five goals in his first two matches, while his brace in the 2021 DFB-Pokal final helped Edin Terzic\u2019s side past RB Leipzig to win the trophy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">5 &#8211; Erling Haaland holds the record for the most goals in a player&#8217;s first 5 appearances in the following competitions:<\/p>\n<p>Premier League (9 goals) &#x1f947;<\/p>\n<p>Bundesliga (8 goals) &#x1f947;<\/p>\n<p>His 8 goals in his first 5 Champions League appearances is bettered only by S\u00e9bastien Haller (9).
