Now he\u2019s back where it all took off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvb.de\/eng\/News\/Overview\/BVB-sign-Jadon-Sancho-on-loan-until-end-of-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jadon Sancho rejoined Borussia Dortmund last week<\/a>, returning from Manchester United on a short-term loan deal.<\/p>\n<p>He returns to Signal Iduna Park after two and a half years in Manchester, where things didn\u2019t quite go to plan following an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/features\/recruitment-development-profit-borussia-dortmunds-record-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u20ac85m move<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 23 year-old struggled for form in England and was frozen out of Erik ten Hag\u2019s squad earlier this season.<\/p>\n<p>Sancho returns to the Bundesliga for the remainder of the campaign, where he registered 89 direct goal involvements in 105 matches during his previous spell.<\/p>\n<p>The winger will be looking to rediscover his form in black and yellow and revive his trembling career.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sancho is back at BVB: &quot;Dortmund is home to me!&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pg5hmbAI_QU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>35 minutes against Darmstadt at the weekend was all he needed to grab an assist for Marco Reus &#8211; the perfect start to a move that seems to fit so well.<\/p>\n<p>But what does the future hold for Jadon Sancho and where will he fit into BVB\u2019s \u2018R\u00fcckrunde\u2019? (German word for second half of the season)<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"borussia dortmund\">Chapter One<\/h2>\n<p>In August 2017, \u2018die Schwarzgelben\u2019 secured the signature of a 17-year-old Sancho, who put pen to paper on a deal worth around \u20ac20m.<\/p>\n<p>This teenage talent was no unknown at this point.<\/p>\n<p>A star in Manchester City\u2019s FA Youth Cup run, the former Watford academy man had shown bags of talent while with City, pushing the fringes of Pep Guardiola\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n<p>Forming part of a talented trio which also included Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz, Sancho was part of the next generation for the Blues.<\/p>\n<p>But after opting not to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola left him out of his pre-season squad for a US tour.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Khaldoon Al Mubarak: &quot;Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden, Brahim Diaz; he became an England international at 18 years old and took the Bundesliga by storm.<\/p>\n<p>After claiming four assists and a goal across 12 appearances in his debut campaign &#8211; a disappointing one for the club &#8211; Sancho\u2019s reputation sky-rocketed the following term.<\/p>\n<p>Notching 12 goals and 18 assists in 34 league appearances, the kid was firmly regarded as one of football\u2019s greatest talents.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, he bettered that. 17 goals and 17 assists in 32 league appearances followed, with Sancho forming great chemistry with a certain Erling Haaland in the process.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3373\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3373\" style=\"width: 689px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Optimized-sancho-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"Jadon Sancho in Borussia Dortmund training\" width=\"689\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Optimized-sancho-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Optimized-sancho.jpeg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jadon Sancho alongside Julian Brandt and Giovanni Reyna in BVB training<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But despite nursing a muscle injury during the 2020\/21 season, Sancho\u2019s red hot form showed no signs of slowing down and rumours of a move to Old Trafford weren\u2019t going away.<\/p>\n<p>In the Champions League, he claimed two goals and three assists in six games.<\/p>\n<p>In the Bundesliga, he registered eight goals and 12 assists in 26 games.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the DFB-Pokal, Sancho netted six times, setting up a further five goals in just six games.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 cup final against RB Leipzig would prove to be his last match with Edin Terzic\u2019s \u2018Borussen\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Two goals and an assist in a victorious final in Berlin were the perfect goodbye present.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea Jadon Sancho&#39;s Bundesliga stats since 2017\/18:<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc65 Apps &#8211; 2.9<br \/>\ud83c\udf21\ufe0f WS Rating &#8211; 7.56<\/p>\n<p>\ud83e\udd2f He only turned 21 in March&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/d7uCcDkZr4\">pic.twitter.com\/d7uCcDkZr4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; WhoScored.com (@WhoScored) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WhoScored\/status\/1402942735699611648?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"manchester united\">What went wrong at United?<\/h2>\n<p>Arriving alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane on the red side of Manchester, great things were expected for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p>But a slow start to the season for United eventually saw Solskjaer sacked.<\/p>\n<p>In came Ralf Rangnick and Sancho enjoyed a short but sweet spell of form.<\/p>\n<p>Across a span of six games, the then 21-year-old scored in the Manchester derby against his former employers and against Southampton, while grabbing assists against Leeds and Tottenham.<\/p>\n<p>However, the situation worsened for both Rangnick\u2019s United and Sancho.<\/p>\n<p>Last season, the hope of a fresh start under Erik ten Hag yielded results on the pitch and a Carabao Cup title.<\/p>\n<p>Sancho chipped in, with goals against Liverpool and Spurs particularly memorable, but the winger struggled to establish himself as a regular contributor in the side.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jadon Sancho\u2019s stats since joining Manchester United in 2021:<\/p>\n<p>Appearances: 82<br \/>Goals: 12<br \/>Assists: 6<\/p>\n<p>Does Sancho deserve more time? \ud83e\udd14\ud83d\udc47 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yqP7hVzLwd\">pic.twitter.com\/yqP7hVzLwd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; mufcmpb (@mufcMPB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mufcMPB\/status\/1700115107487916057?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He started both legs in the Red Devils\u2019 Europa League win over Barcelona and had a fairly good end to the season.<\/p>\n<p>But after just three games this term, the situation escalated like nobody could\u2019ve foreseen.<\/p>\n<p>Ten Hag came out and said that Sancho hadn\u2019t been selected due to \u2018poor performances in training\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the player took to social media to say he felt like a \u2018scapegoat\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Such outspoken conduct saw Sancho suspended and eventually loaned back to BVB.<\/p>\n<p>There were reports during his Dortmund days that Sancho\u2019s attitude was never the best.<\/p>\n<p>Haaland has since been portrayed as a good influence on his teammate, getting him to training on time and having other similar responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Players with such a questionable attitude won\u2019t excel at a club heading in the wrong direction like United, with no real structure or organisation.<\/p>\n<p>In a disjointed mess of a squad, it was hard for Sancho to succeed but he certainly didn\u2019t help himself.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bundesliga\">A win for all parties?<\/h2>\n<p>Jadon Sancho\u2019s return to Borussia Dortmund certainly appears to make a lot of sense at face value.<\/p>\n<p>Sancho is returning to a place that was once his happy home, where he enjoyed the best years of his career to date.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jadon Sancho - Best Moments, Goals, Skills &amp; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Returning to the comfort of such an environment would always appeal to him, especially with how things have gone this season at United.<\/p>\n<p>He has also worked with Edin Terzic and many of the current squad at Signal Iduna Park before.<\/p>\n<p>This is a great chance for him to rekindle the spark he showed in his last stint in black and yellow.<\/p>\n<p>With Euro 2024 coming up, the incentive is even higher for the Englishman to succeed again.<\/p>\n<p>The Premier League is currently of a higher prestige than the Bundesliga, so if he does find that form, he\u2019ll likely be eyeing a return to the top flight with a point to prove.<\/p>\n<p>United will be hoping for the same outcome. If all goes to plan, in six months\u2019 time they\u2019ll get a rejuvenated young player who is enjoying his football again.<\/p>\n<p>Then, perhaps if ten Hag is no longer manager, Sancho may have a future at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, the Dutchman may give him another chance or the club may look to sell him on for the value he will have raised through good form.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkySportsPL\/status\/1746493651121840416<\/p>\n<p>As for Borussia Dortmund, the squad has a fresh but familiar face.<\/p>\n<p>If they can help Sancho return to those levels of years ago, they\u2019ve got one hell of a weapon as they look to surge up the table in the R\u00fcckrunde.<\/p>\n<p>The club are paying a reported \u20ac7.5m for the move on top of the majority of the player\u2019s wages.<\/p>\n<p>Is that really worth it if Sancho is ultimately just using this move as a stepping stone for six months?<\/p>\n<p>If he does rediscover his old self, then those abilities are priceless.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s definitely a concrete possibility that he will play a major role for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham have come and gone, but the Yellow Wall will appreciate every minute that Jadon Sancho gives to this club.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not often that players return to the place where they enjoyed their golden days, so ultimately, this could be a great deal for Dortmund.<\/p>\n<p>However, if it doesn\u2019t go to plan, this deal looks a lot worse for BVB than it does for United.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jude Bellingham vs. Jadon Sancho: The Dortmund Triathlon\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-Zy3uwFDJPU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bvb\">Where will he fit at BVB?<\/h2>\n<p>Jadon Sancho joins a Dortmund squad that looks slightly depleted due to injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The likes of Karim Adeyemi, S\u00e9bastien Haller and Felix Nmecha are all currently nursing medical problems.<\/p>\n<p>Edin Terzic\u2019s side currently sit in fifth place in the Bundesliga.<\/p>\n<p>With Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender back as assistant coaches after the winter break, now seems a good time for the club to start afresh.<\/p>\n<p>A 3-0 win at Darmstadt was certainly a good start.<\/p>\n<p>In that game, Sancho was brought on with 35 minutes to play, replacing Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to make his second debut for the club.<\/p>\n<p>His square pass to Marco Reus 22 minutes in gave him a first assist back in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sancho Comeback Secures Win! | Darmstadt - Borussia Dortmund 0-3 | Highlights | MD 17 \u2013 Bundesliga\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0KUaKJs6zQ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Naturally a left-winger, Sancho played on the right at Darmstadt and certainly delivered, playing on his preferred foot.<\/p>\n<p>But with Donyell Malen coming in and out of form, Sancho will be eyeing his starting role on the left flank.<\/p>\n<p>On that flank he may also link up with fellow January loan signing Ian Maatsen, who joined from Chelsea earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Giovanni Reyna and Adeyemi (when he returns from injury) will also be targeting that spot.<\/p>\n<p>Bynoe-Gittens followed in Sancho\u2019s footsteps, leaving City for Dortmund almost four years ago.
