{"id":3395,"date":"2024-01-30T15:31:01","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T15:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/?p=3395"},"modified":"2024-01-30T15:38:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T15:38:27","slug":"top-10-bvb-january-signings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/features\/top-10-bvb-january-signings\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 10 BVB January Signings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The January transfer window provides clubs with the chance to reassess and reinforce their squads at the halfway stage of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Players recruited in the winter window can often be the perfect additions to propel a club\u2019s season in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that one player can transform a team\u2019s entire campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Borussia Dortmund have had such luck in the past with some of their January signings.<\/p>\n<p>In this current window, the club delved into the English market.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea\u2019s Ian Maatsen joined BVB on loan, alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/transfer-news\/jadon-sancho-the-sequel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">returning \u2018Borusse\u2019 hero Jadon Sancho<\/a> from Manchester United.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jadon Sancho&#39;s return to Borussia Dortmund has dominated the headlines, but it&#39;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CFC<\/a> loanee who is making more of a splash.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/honigstein?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@honigstein<\/a> hails the &#39;incredible impact&#39; of Ian Maatsen so far on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheTotallyShow?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheTotallyShow<\/a> this week.. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/STtpBzIY6x\">pic.twitter.com\/STtpBzIY6x<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Athletic | Football (@TheAthleticFC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAthleticFC\/status\/1751568552836857960?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 28, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Both players have impressed in their opening appearances.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/transfer-news\/borussia-dortmund-complete-julian-ryerson-signing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Last year\u2019s window saw Julian Ryerson and Julien Duranville arrive.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the jury remains out on how they are regarded by the Yellow Wall, it doesn\u2019t appear that they\u2019ll follow the fates of some of the Black and Yellows\u2019 failed January recruits, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/features\/dortmunds-transfer-market-misses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonardo Balerdi and Alexander Isak.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead, they will be hoping that their Dortmund careers will pan out in a similar fashion to those of the following list:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"akanji\">Manuel Akanji<\/h2>\n<p>In January 2018, a 22-year-old Manuel Akanji joined \u2018die Schwarzgelben\u2019 as one of Europe\u2019s most promising young defenders.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving from Basel for a reported \u20ac21.5m, the Switzerland international went on to play over 150 times for the club.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3397\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3397\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3397\" src=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Optimized-manuel-akanji-300x252.jpeg\" alt=\"Manuel Akanji of Borussia Dortmund goes up against RB Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku\" width=\"676\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Optimized-manuel-akanji-300x252.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.borussiadortmund.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Optimized-manuel-akanji.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manuel Akanji goes up against RB Leipzig&#8217;s Christopher Nkunku<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While injuries and form throughout his last year at Signal Iduna Park tarnished his legacy somewhat, it can\u2019t be denied that Akanji was a great servant to the club and an ever-present.<\/p>\n<p>Since moving on to Manchester City in 2022, the 28-year-old has only further proved his quality, as a dependable defender in Pep Guardiola\u2019s treble-winning squad.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hummels\">Mats Hummels<\/h2>\n<p>The love triangle involving Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich has been a hot topic in many Bundesliga transfer windows.<\/p>\n<p>But it was an 18-month loan move to North Rhine-Westphalia in January 2008 when Hummels first saw where his heart truly belonged.<\/p>\n<p>The German\u2019s form throughout that initial spell saw J\u00fcrgen Klopp make the move permanent.<\/p>\n<p>In Klopp\u2019s golden era squad, Hummels was a stalwart at the back. autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"emre can\">Emre Can<\/h2>\n<p>Like Hummels, Emre Can joined \u2018die Borussen\u2019 initially on loan in January before making the move permanent in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>The German arrived from Juventus in 2020 and soon established himself as a true leader in the dressing room and a valuable squad member.<\/p>\n<p>Carrying Bundesliga experience from spells with Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen, Can\u2019s \u20ac25m move appears shrewd business with the 30-year-old having been named club captain last summer.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lehmann\">Jens Lehmann<\/h2>\n<p>Controversially, former Schalke 04 and AC Milan goalkeeper Jens Lehmann joined the Black and Yellows in January 1999.<\/p>\n<p>The German played 179 times for Dortmund, helping the club to a Bundesliga title and UEFA Cup final in 2002.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jens Lehmann - Bundesliga&#039;s Greatest\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/paWnmWC5yfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He went on to be a part of the famous \u2018Invincibles\u2019 side with Arsenal two years later, cementing his status as one of the game\u2019s greatest \u2018keepers.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rosicky\">Tomas Rosicky<\/h2>\n<p>In January 2001, \u2018die Schwarzgelben\u2019 broke the Bundesliga transfer record to bring in Sparta Prague\u2019s Tomas Rosicky.<\/p>\n<p>Nicknamed \u2018Little Mozart\u2019, the Czech Republic international played 189 times in black and yellow, scoring 24 times while setting up 47 goals.<\/p>\n<p>The playmaker was a key part in the club\u2019s 2002 title-winning side.<\/p>\n<p>Rosicky enjoyed a fruitful five and a half year stay at Signal Iduna Park before moving on to Arsenal in 2006, where he would spend the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChampionsLeague\/status\/1180040081119293440<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"kehl\">Sebastian Kehl<\/h2>\n<p>A year after Rosicky became a \u2018Borusse\u2019, Sebastian Kehl arrived at Borussia Dortmund, signing for a little over \u20ac3m from Freiburg.<\/p>\n<p>The defensive midfielder made just 12 appearances before he was crowned a German champion after just five months at the club.<\/p>\n<p>Kehl\u2019s role in the BVB squad only grew more significant as time went by; he would play 39 times in the club\u2019s double-winning 2011\/12 campaign, and nine times on the way to the 2013 Champions League final.<\/p>\n<p>Club captain for six years during that golden era, the current director of football left in 2015 after 362 appearances.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"haaland\">Erling Haaland<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the most famous January signing for Dortmund in recent times, Erling Haaland arrived in 2020 with the world at his feet.<\/p>\n<p>Having garnered a worldwide wonderkid reputation in little time at RB Salzburg, the then 19-year-old was a freak of nature.<\/p>\n<p>Given the way he started his time at Signal Iduna Park, it was no secret why.<\/p>\n<p>A debut hat-trick against Augsburg was followed by consecutive braces against Cologne and Union Berlin.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FC Augsburg vs. Borussia Dortmund I 3-5 I Haaland Hat-Trick Leads BVB to Sensational Comeback\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qF3Z87yviB0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was the most prolific goalscoring form any Bundesliga newbie had produced, with Haaland breaking record after record.<\/p>\n<p>The Norwegian\u2019s eventual tally of 86 goals and 23 assists in 89 games made the \u20ac20m fee paid in January 2020 look like a huge bargain.<\/p>\n<p>He has gone on to achieve even more at Manchester City.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sammer\">Matthias Sammer<\/h2>\n<p>One of Borussia Dortmund\u2019s all-time greats was a January signing.<\/p>\n<p>Matthias Sammer arrived in January 1993 from Inter Milan and the five years that followed were nothing short of exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>After scoring 10 times from defensive midfield in just his first half-season at the club, Sammer went on to be *the* key man in Ottmar Hitzfeld\u2019s famous BVB side.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Man Who Won The Ballon d&#039;Or Over Prime R9!\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I0uxAGCUJG8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Operating in a sweeper or \u2018libero\u2019 role, the German helped the club to successive Bundesliga titles in 1995 and 1996, before captaining \u2018die Schwarzgelben\u2019 to their first, and only (to date), Champions League crown in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>In those league-winning years, Sammer was named Footballer of the Year in Germany in each, while his 1996 European Championships triumph with the national team also helped him to the Ballon d\u2019Or.<\/p>\n<p>After retiring early, he even went on to manage the club;
