Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt: The Major Talking Points
Borussia Dortmund defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 to claim this year’s German Cup title. Dembele and Aubameyang scored for Dortmund, while Rebic got one back for the team who were second best on the night.
The first half saw both teams get a goal each. Dortmund took the lead through Dembele in the 8th minute, who scored a stunning goal after dancing his way past a couple of Frankfurt defenders. Frankfurt could’ve equalised before the half hour mark, but Seferovic failed to score from a Rebic cross. Rebic then got one back for the supposed underdogs, as he scored a super goal after being sent through on goal, with his shot beating Burki spectacularly.
The second half was a bit more eventful, and Aubameyang scored for the winning side by converting a penalty after Pulisic was tripped inside the area. He missed another penalty in the dying minutes of the game, but that error didn’t prove to be too costly, as Dortmund ended their trophy drought with a win that would certainly bolster their satisfaction after a largely underwhelming season.
Here are the major Talking Points from the Match-
Dortmund’s biggest task of the summer- Keep Dembele
Ousmane Dembele has had a fantastic breakthrough season at Dortmund. After watching him play, it’s hard to digest the fact that he’s still only 20-years-old. His dribbling skills, link-up play and finishing have made him arguably the best young player in the world right now. His goal ensured their progression to the Final and it was his goal that made the difference here as well. His superb form has seen him be linked to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea, and if Dortmund want to stay at this level next year, the biggest task for them this summer would not be to recruit great players, but instead to keep their best players at the club. And Dembele’s certainly at the top of that list.
Reus Injury Scare
Even though the match went in Dortmund’s favour, it certainly wasn’t their easiest of nights as they lost Reus to a possible long term injury. He looked uncomfortable going into the break following a rash challenge by his opponents, and could now miss up to 6 months with a possible ACL injury. This would certainly prove to be a nightmare for his club, who are well versed with his quality and worth. And they would certainly want to sign another attacking midfielder to cover up for him in the opening months of the next campaign.
Seferovic Misses his chance…twice
Haris Seferovic didn’t have the best of games, and he fluffed the opportunity to win the cup on two different occasions. First, he failed to meet Rebic’s cross which would’ve surely been a goal and then he hit the bar when through on goal. He has had a great time at the club so far, but this performance and two chances missed would certainly haunt him for a few days. Who knows what the outcome would’ve been for the brave Frankfurt side had he converted either of the two chances.
Auba Leaves on a High
Aubameyang’s penalty in the 67th minute decided the outcome of the match and he waved a fitting farewell to the supporters with a trophy, as this could very possibly be his last ever appearance for the club. He has already expressed his desire to leave and with clubs like PSG, AC Milan and Tianjin Quanjian circling him, this could prove to be a happy ending to a dream story.
